Play Name | Bandra Saturday Night |
Year | 1965 |
Plot | |
Summary | Bandra Saturday Night was a short twenty-minute play written by Alyque Padamsee. It arrived at a time when Theatre Group felt a desperate need for original Indian writing. It was Alyque’s firm belief that while classics were important texts that ought to be performed, it was also crucial that Indian’s write about themselves. With this thought in mind, a play was written that spoke to the people in their language. The elders hated the production due to the improper use of the English language or what was labeled as ‘Bandra Lingo’, but the youth absolutely loved it because it spoke to them in their language. The success of Bandra Saturday Night led to an increase in search for new Indian writing, and the subsequent birth of the Sultan Padamsee Playwriting Competition. |
