Theatre Group Bombay
Thespo
Thespo got it’s name from the 6th Century BC Greek poet Thespis who is credited as the first person to appear on stage as an “actor” playing a character, and thus breaking the previous tradition of just chorus and verse. He used different masks to portray different characters on stage, a form that came to be known as Tragedy.
Thespo like most other youth festivals in Mumbai, began as a one-act play competition. But over time, it grew to host both small platform performances and full-length plays. A team of screening panelists travel to various parts of the country and college competitions in order to watch as many plays as they can before they pick the final five that are screened in the month of December, at The Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai.
It wasn’t too long ago, when opportunities for serious young theatre enthusiasts were limited. Youth theatre was dominated by under-rehearsed one-act plays that were created primarily for the purpose of competing in college festivals. Theatre Group Bombay realized that latent talent was being lost out due to lack of opportunities and felt that the bar needed to be raised higher. It was with this thought in mind that Thespo was born in the year 1999.
The festival was created to celebrate youth theatre, to nurture it and help it grow into work that can stand on it’s own. Which is why everyone is encouraged to participate and contribute, provided that they love theatre and are under 25 years of age.
The dates for this year’s festival are 13- 18th of December 2017
At Prithvi Theatre & NCPA, Mumbai
