Salome
Back to Plays Done
Play Name | Salome |
Year | 1943 |
Plot | Salome is tragedy by Oscar Wilde that was written in the year 1981. The play tells in one act the Biblical story of Salome, the stepdaughter of the tetrarch Herod Antipas, who, to her stepfather's dismay but to the delight of her mother Herodias, requests the head of Jokanaan (John the Baptist) on a silver platter as a reward for dancing the dance of the seven veils. |
Summary | Theatre Group’s production of Salome became infamous during its time. In the play, the actress playing Salome had to shed seven layers of clothes in a sequence to symbolise her passage through the seven veils, till she was almost in the nude. The Parsi community, who were fairly conservative at the time and to whom the actress belonged, were not too happy about this unraveling of the character. Therefore, Bobby ended up receiving a bunch of threatening letters, and so the news about the sequence spread like wildfire and the production became notorious. Eventually the bit involving the removal of clothes was evolved into a dance sequence, and was done by Roshan – Bobby and Alyque’s sister-, who eventually went on to be known as Roshan Alkazi. Salome also marked the debut of Alyque Padamsee on to the Bombay stage; he played a spear-bearer for King Herod. |
